It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like)

Top European Sounds You Can Find in London this Summer

London is popular with tourists for many reasons, but it isn’t just Buckingham Palace and Harrods that will have domestic and international visitors to our shores excited this summer.  Most people recognise London for having a thriving music scene, from the rock & roll indie vibe of Camden Town right through to the jazz clubs of Soho and the hip-hop scene south of the Thames.

Music from across the world is also a frequently heard sound on London’s streets, with everyone from individual buskers to organized bands bringing their sounds to the capital.  Such is the diverse mix of music that you could easily mistake yourself for being in any capital around the world, and particularly in Europe.

With that in mind, we’ve gone out and found the top European bands and events music lovers can check out in London this summer.

Scared to Dance

Scared to Dance is actually the name of a popular club night in East London, and May’s offering is their annual Swedish Night, taking place on May 31st.  Two Swedish DJ’s are teaming up at Scared to Dance to bring you a selection of the hottest Swedish music from through the years.

There are no rules for the club night, so if you want to get your Scandinavian swag on you should prepare to rock out to everyone from ABBA to The Hives.  If you’re unsure if this is the event for you, the soundtrack from last year’s Scared to Dance Swedish night can be found here.

Söndörgö

Söndörgö have been widely praised by the UK media for some time, and later this year you’ll have the opportunity to check them out for yourself in London.  The best thing about the opportunity to see Söndörgö live this summer?  They’re playing Walthamstow Garden Party, which is a completely free to attend event (although you will need some money for nibbles and the bar!).

Söndörgö are appearing at the first day of the garden party, Saturday 26th of July, and you should get down to see them before they become a massive name and tickets to their gigs cost a fortune.

Rebetiko Carnival

Rebetiko itself is from Greece, but in reality this is world music in its most authentic form, with influences from the world of American Deep South jazz, Latin American sounds, and Indian music creating a hugely diverse sound that you can hear across London throughout June.

Check out the Rebetiko Carnival website to discover where the hottest events are happening close to you so you can experience it for yourself.  If you can, try and get down to a violin demonstration and lesson sessions – you’ll amaze yourself with what you can learn.

European Music in London

Some of the best sounds from across Europe, with influences from even further afield, are headed to London in the coming months.  Be sure to get to a European club night, festival, or garden party, and if you can’t at least spend five minutes listening to a busker, and get some European flavour into your London musical life this summer.

Top 5 Android Apps for Guitarists

Whether you need assistance with tuning your guitar or are looking for some inspiration for playing your instrument outside of the internet and guitar tutorial books, apps are a great way to do something different relating to your guitar playing.

With this in mind, we’ve brought together our five favourite android apps for guitarists that you can use to make your guitar sound great and teach yourself some exceptional licks and musical sequences.

1. Tuner – gStrings Free

If you’re not at the level of guitar mastery yet that allows you to tune your instrument by ear, this is a great app that will come in handy for helping you to tune your instrument in whatever tone you want.

The great thing about Tuner – gStrings Free is that it is so much more than just your standard tuning app.  You have a whole range of settings you can play around with and it is even suitable for using with the violin and other string instruments.

2. Mobile Metronome

Metronomes aren’t as widely used as they once were, but that’s more down to the fact that people don’t enjoy carrying a metronome around rather than the fact musicians and guitarists started to find them unhelpful.

This app takes away that problem, providing you with a Mobile Metronome that you can carry in your pocket and start up whenever you need it, whether you’re rehearsing in a studio, busking on the street, or holding a jam session in a friend’s garage.

3. Chordbot

This is the essential Android guitar app for musicians on the move who want to be able to get their inspirations down and recorded whenever possible.  You can also use Chordbot (link to Lite version on Google Play) as an accompaniment to your guitar, making it easy for you to create and demo chords wherever you are.

If you need a backing track for a jam, or have lyrics but can’t find a musical spark to match them to anything, there’s even an automatic song generator included for you to use.

4. Ultimate Guitar Tabs

It is well known that many guitarists and other popular musicians cannot read music, preferring instead to trust their ears and use guitar tabs.

Ultimate Guitar Tabs gives you unlimited access to the database at http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ and also allows you to access your favourite tracks and tabs offline, meaning you won’t be eating up your mobile data allowance when you head off to rehearsals or feel like having a jam session at a friend’s house.

5. GChord

This is a simple and unassuming app, but if you’re new to the guitar and are struggling to master chords, it is definitely something you should be downloading.  GChord will help you get to grips with all the finger positions you need in order to play every chord, whether you decide to search for the chords yourself or play the chord and discover what it is later.

These five apps are great for guitarists at all levels, and ought to be on your Android device if you’re passionate about getting more from your instrument and from your guitar playing in general.

How to Choose Strings for Your Guitar

No matter whether you are a novice or an experienced guitarist, the type of strings you use can make a huge difference to the sound you are able to create with your instrument.  As you get to know your instrument better and start to understand your own guitar playing style, you’ll start to gain a greater appreciation of how the strings you choose can influence your sound.

At the same time, you ought to appreciate that your strings are only one part of your instrument, although the more confidence you have in yours the better a job you’ll do at playing your guitar.

Here are some tips that will help you choose strings for your guitar.

Use the Right Type of Strings

When you’re choosing guitar strings, it isn’t a case of one size fits all.  You need to ensure you have the right type of strings for your instrument.

The three standard types of string are electric guitar strings, acoustic guitar steel strings, and nylon strings, which can also be used on an acoustic guitar.

Nickel wound strings are the standard type used on electric guitars.  Ernie Ball Regular Slinky strings are a great option for beginners, although they are still favoured by industry giants such as Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney.

Your acoustic guitar will be designed for either nylon or steel strings.  If you’re unsure of what you need, go to the shop where you bought the acoustic guitar and ask.  When choosing your strings, you need to think about the tone and how easy you want playing the guitar to be.  A lighter string will be easier to play and doesn’t require you to be as aggressive in your style, while heavier, thicker strings if a more bold tone but require you to play in an attacking manner.

Consider Your Playing Style

We’ve touched on how your playing style can influence your choice of strings, but another element of your style can also be a factor in your decision.  This element is whether you play the guitar with a pick or fingerstyle.

Heavy strings are difficult to play fingerstyle and with a pick, although it is advised that you use a pick if you choose these strings, as they can damage your fingers and leave you in pain when you play.  In contrast, lighter, thinner strings are ideal for fingerstyle players, with silk and steel strings been the best options here.  However, these strings aren’t suitable for electric guitars, so if you’re playing an electric guitar fingerstyle, you’ll have to compromise.

Other Considerations

Flat polished strings are the style to buy if you’re going to be playing fingerstyle.  You can get these for electric and acoustic guitars; they’re easy to play and easy on the fingers, too.

Flat wound strings are a great choice for electric guitars, whether you’re playing fingerstyle or with a pick.  Flat wound strings are a popular choice among jazz guitarists owing to their smooth sound, but they are recommended to any guitarist so you can get the essence of the sound you want, before creating distortions or effects with your guitar dials or amplifier.

Ensure you take the time to choose the right type of strings for your guitar; you’ll create a more expressive sound and have a lot more confidence in your instrument as a result.

How to Learn Fingerstyle Guitar

When you are learning to play guitar, you will usually choose whether you wish to learn to play fingerstyle or with a guitar pick. For many years, there was a distinct split between guitarists and bass guitarists, in that the former would be played with a pick and the latter fingerstyle.

However, the lines between when to play with a guitar pick and fingerstyle have become increasingly blurred through the years. While fingerstyle guitar is typically used to describe the playing of the guitar with the fingers, it is also its own unique genre of music, as evidenced by the popularity of the likes of Andy McKee and Don Ross.

To watch these successful fingerstyle guitar players, it is easy to get intimidated and think that you would find it very difficult to learn how to do this for yourself. Here are some tips to help you get started, whether you want to play guitar with your fingers or become a true fingerstyle guitarist.

Commit to Practicing

It is possible to become a self-taught fingerstyle guitarist, but you should commit to practicing for at least an hour a day. On top of this, if you can secure some private tutoring for yourself, even if it is just with someone who isn’t an official teacher but can play guitar to a reasonable standard, you will see some benefits.

Here are some ideas that will help you to get started, too.

Playing Your Guitar

The important thing to remember when you’re looking to play fingerstyle guitar is that you need to be set up to play each string individually. Many make the mistake of believing they merely need to strum all the strings at once. This is fine if you’re generally planning on playing chords only, but it isn’t going to help if you want to become a true fingerstyle guitar player.

It is best to set yourself up to play the sixth, fifth, and fourth strings with your thumb, index finger for third, middle finger for second, and ring finger for first. You should also set up so that you can use the palm/base of your hand to mute the strings when you need to. You can use your little finger if you want or if it feels more comfortable, but it is generally redundant.

Starting to Practice

When you start to practice, look to keep it simple. Begin by playing the strings with your left hand free, before gradually starting to play in different tunes.

A good way to get used to playing with the thumb and fingers simultaneously is to play 6-123 as a sequence repeatedly, followed by 5-123 and 4-123, before you start to mix it up some more.

Using YouTube

We mentioned McKee and Ross earlier, but there is a huge number of fingerstyle guitarists you can watch on YouTube as a means of getting inspiration and understanding how they play. Many have their own YouTube tutorials, too, which could be a great resource for yourself when you’re starting out with learning fingerstyle guitar.
