It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like)

4 Reunions we want to see in 2015

Everyone loves a bit of drama and speculation, and band reunions are a guaranteed way to satisfy both needs. As soon as a band stops performing, whether after a huge fight or just for members to try something new, the music world starts to talk about a possible reunion.

Some reunions always seem a bit more exciting than others and some reunions are a lot more likely to happen than others. But what are the rumours saying about 2015? Here are the confirmed and unconfirmed reunions we want to see this year.

System of a Down

The US-based metal band truly revolutionised the scene and there isn’t a metal lover that doesn’t want to see them back in action. The band gave everyone an early Christmas treat last year when it announced it’s going to perform at the KROQ’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, but it looks like there’s more to come later this year.

The band has confirmed it’ll perform a global reunion tour, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Armenian massacre. The tour will conclude in Armenia, which will be the first time the band will perform in their homeland.

There’s no word yet, whether there will also be new material worthy of an album and so far, the band hasn’t talked about the future. We sure hope the band doesn’t just reunite for these seven performances.

The Kinks

The Kinks reunion has long been in the talks, but it had seemed highly unlikely, considering the difficulties between the two brothers. But Dave Davies has been openly talking about his desire for a reunion.

The Kinks fans got even more excited when reports stated the band has confirmed to reunite in 2015, but Dave Davies soon refuted these statements.

In a more recent interview, the guitar legend told that there is a possibility the band will get together in 2015, although a large-scale tour is very unlikely. In the meantime, fans might feel a bit happier knowing both Dave and Ray are recording new solo material.

Oasis

The year is the 20th anniversary of the fantastic album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and this has got Oasis fans excited about the possibility of a reunion. The problem with Oasis is you never know – even if something has been confirmed, there’s a chance it won’t happen.

The brothers have a famously sour relationship with each other, but the anniversary might just be enough to get the pair together once again. Although there have been plenty of rumours, there’s also been plenty of denial and it’s more unlikely the duo won’t manage to repair their relationship for a large-scale tour. But we can still hope!

Blur

Another Brit rock favourite, Blur, is also on top of the lists people want to see back together this year. The two bands have had a famous rivalry for years now and have produced a number of memorable guitar riffs. While the two have been competing for years, there have been some reports the frontmen have finally buried the hatchet. Yet, the old rivalry might be enough to ensure to us fans that if one of the bands reunites, perhaps the other will as well.

There’s been no official word yet, although bassist Alex James has hinted a reunion might be possible, following a brief yet very successful one a few years ago. The band is planning for a gig at their hometown of Colchester, where a campaign to turn an art gallery into a Blur-themed museum is under way.

How to Make Music Your New Year Hobby

If you are looking for a resolution that will last in 2015, you should consider starting a new hobby and there’s nothing better than music. Music as a hobby is much more than just learning to play a new instrument and so you can truly develop yourself as a person with this resolution.

Here are tips on how to make music your new hobby this year!

Why Music?

The world is full of great hobbies, but music is definitely among the best. It’s something we humans have been doing for a long time, so the popularity of music as a hobby shouldn’t come as a surprise. If you’re not sure whether music is worth being your hobby, consider the following benefits:

  • Music can help you meet new people
  • Music can introduce you to new cultures
  • Music is a great way to boost your cognitive skills
  • Music can help your self-confidence and mood

Follow Music Blogs

As mentioned above, music isn’t just about playing an instrument. You can enjoy music in a number of ways and reading more about it is one way. Therefore, music blogs are a great way to get started with your new hobby.

If you are interested in history, then you can find music blogs that delve into the history of instruments, music genres and even specific bands. If you haven’t found your favourite style of music yet, then you can explore different genres through music blogs.

Music blogs are also great for meeting new people. The comment sections and countless music forums are great places to discover people with similar interests and to learn more about music in general. Perhaps you might even get excited about detailing your own journey into music in a blog!

Pick Your Instrument

You should also consider playing an instrument, whether just for fun or as a more serious hobby. Many people don’t get started with playing an instrument because they don’t find the right instrument for them and they believe it is too difficult to learn to play at older age. But learning a new instrument isn’t very time-consuming and laborious these days with the help of technology.

It’s a good idea to visit a large instrument store and test different instruments. You might not even know how an oboe sounds, but it could be the perfect instrument for you! Keep your eyes open and check out different options.

When it comes to learning, you also have plenty of choice. There are naturally the typical music groups you can join, but you can also take online lessons and learn to play an instrument from the comfort of your own home.

Invite Your Friends

New hobbies are more fun if you have other people to join you. Get your friends excited about music as well! You could start a little band – even just for fun – and have practice sessions at your house. This is a fun way to catch up with mates, as well as improve your skillset.

If you have children, then music is a great hobby for the whole family. Children can benefit from music and it can be a cool way to spend time with the kids.

Go Out and Enjoy Music

Finally, whether you learn to play an instrument or just become a musical genius by learning everything about the history of music, you can further enjoy it by going to gigs and concerts. The world is full of great music from big names to small indie bands. Support your local music venues by visiting them and don’t forget to check out big festivals for the summer!

When it comes to developing yourself as a person and having fun, music is a great hobby to pick! So make a New Year’s resolution that’ll last and start a new hobby.

5 Music Blogs You Should be Reading This Year

When it comes to finding new music, online music blogs can be a great source. There are so many good blogs out there from band blogs to industry insiders shedding some light on how the business side of music operates. If you want to widen your own musical knowledge, then these five blogs should definitely go to your reading list.

The Blue Walrus

The Blue Walrus blog has been going on for a long time, as it first saw its daylight in 2006. The blog is a great insight into different aspects of the industry, as the writers all come from different music backgrounds and they have a wide variety of interests.

The blog is focused on introducing new music to its readers and it mainly talks about folk and indie music. The posts are often just simple music video uploads, making it a fantastic ‘read’ while you enjoy your morning coffee. You are guaranteed to find a new band to listen to on the Blue Walrus.

Gorilla VS. Bear

There’s plenty of exciting music being played on the other side of the pond as well and Gorilla VS. Bear is definitely one of the best US-based music blogs. The site is all about new music and you’ll definitely find plenty of future chart toppers from the blog.

The great thing about the blog is that even though it has won all sorts of accolades it still manages to feel authentic. When you find a band on the blog, you know the writers find the band exciting as well and don’t just promote it for the sake of it. There’s also plenty to do from videos to photos on the blog.

TinMan London

If you like your music blog with a bit of street attitude, then TinMan London is a great site to bookmark. The blog is all about urban music and you can even read about the hottest fashion tips from the blog. Although it focuses on urban styles, there are still plenty of music genres to choose from, as you can find new talent in hip hop as well as pop.

The Daily Swarm

Music is much more than just a selection of new bands and if you want to stay on top of the industry, then The Daily Swarm is a must-read blog. The focus of the blog is mainly on music news, although you are bound to discover new talent there as well. It’s just the right blog to read while you are stuck in a traffic jam.

The layout makes it easy to see everything at a glance, although the site is currently going through transformation, which might mean there are new things on the horizon. There are also plenty of videos to look at if you aren’t very keen on reading long stories.

Top Music Festivals in Early 2015

Now that the festive season has ended, the winter darkness can easily become a bit too much to take. But if you want to brighten up your season a bit more, you can do so by checking out some fantastic music festivals – and there are plenty of great festivals taking place around the world.

The following music festivals are all happening at the start of the year and will guarantee to add some more fun to your New Year!

Sydney Festival, Australia

A trip to Down Under is definitely going to cheer you up, as the summer season is in full swing there. The Sydney festival will also add its own magic to the mix with the line-up including amazing talent like Atomic Bomb! Band and Tex Perkins.

The venues bring their own unique element to the mix, as you can experience music in an old prison among others. You can find more information from the website.

When? January 8-26

Eurosonic Noordeslag, Groningen, the Netherlands

If you want something a bit closer to home, you should head down to Groningen in the Netherlands in mid-January. The city is a little, sleepy university town that will definitely show you a thing or two about proper partying.

The festival is famous for introducing new European talent and you can probably hear some of the bands in Glastonbury this summer. We recommend catching up Kaleo and Deers, with the full timetable available online now.

When? January 14-17

Where’s The Music, Norrköping, Sweden

If you are a fan of Scandinavian music, then Where’s The Music festival in Sweden is a must-see event. The city of Norrköping is a beautiful place on its own and the rock ‘n’ roll festival in February adds its own layer of fun to the location.

There’s plenty of music to enjoy here from classic Scandinavian metal to the more exotic Sami rap. Our pick would definitely be Sweden’s own talent, Jennie Abrahamson. You don’t want to miss this event and as it’s close to Valentine’s Day, you might even want to surprise your other half with tickets!

When? February 12-14

Tallinn Music Week, Estonia

You probably won’t end up meeting any big, famous names at the Tallinn Music Week, but it’s still a great little festival to check out. The city is a fantastic little place with plenty of art-nouveau architecture and relatively cheap prices, providing the perfect backdrop for great music.

The music festival adds plenty of buzz to the city and you have a nice selection of genres available. The artists for this year are not announced yet, but they will be added to the website in February. Furthermore, if you are into classical music, then the Tallinn Music Week has a great selection of classical events as well.

When? March 25-28

If you have a few days to take off, then any of the above events is a great spot for a holiday. You’ll get to experience the cool locations as well as enjoy some great music. If you are looking something a bit closer to home, then make sure to check out the coolest music venues in London. Let 2015 be the year of music!

Who are the World’s Best Bass Players?

It’s easy to forget about the importance of the bass line, but it’s hard to imagine classics like Back in Black or Another Brick in The Wall without a bass player. The bassist provides so much depth and support to the song, almost keeping the whole song together. But who have been the most influential bass players of all times?

Flea

Perhaps one of the best bass players still around has to be Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He has developed a unique sound and you can usually know when he is playing in a specific song.

Flea actually has a jazz background and you can see his playing style is deeply influenced by this genre. He also has picked up something from the 1980s punk scene in Los Angeles, which also adds depth to his unique style.

John Entwistle

The Who bass player is magnificent with his riffs. His nicknames the Ox and Thunderfingers are great examples of what John Entwistle does when he plays the bass. In fact, his bass lines are so powerful he was often able to overshadow Pete Townshend’s guitar riffs.

His training on the piano influenced Entwistle’s playing style. He also used to play the French horn before he switched to bass, and we are glad that he did!

Geddy Lee

You can’t but wonder how Geddy Lee manages to do everything, but this member of Rush is somehow able to be a masterful bass player, lead singer and the keyboards player simultaneously! When he has a keyboard part to play, he just uses bass pedals to create the tone.

If you want to learn from the best, then Geddy Lee’s bass playing talent is definitely worth exploring. His style is so intricate it always manages to surprise you.

Paul McCartney

Perhaps our most surprising pick comes in the form of Paul McCartney, who is better known as a songwriter and even guitarist. But he was the bass player in the Beatles and McCartney created some amazing, flawless bass parts.

McCartney is truly one of the most talented musicians of all times. As mentioned, he is known for his guitar skills, but he also briefly played the drums on The White Album in 1968 when Ringo Starr took a short break from the band.

Les Claypool

If you’d have to pick one slap bass player great, it would probably be Less Claypool. He was deeply influenced by Geddy Lee and you can get that Memphis vibe from his playing. Even though you can hear Geddy Lee’s influence in Claypool’s style, it is still very much a unique sound.

His bands Primus and Oysterhead have enjoyed his funky, slap bass sound and his unique sound has added plenty to the brilliant songs, yet crazy songs.

John Paul Jones

The Led Zeppelin mastermind has long been regarded as the greatest session bassists of all time. Not only has he formed the fantastic Led Zeppelin sound with Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Bonham, but also he has performed with the likes of Donovan and Cat Stevens.

Although he didn’t make a noise of himself when it came to publicity in Led Zeppelin, the bass lines he created truly transformed the songs. His most recent amazing adventure was the Them Crooked Vultures band with Dave Grohl and Josh Homme.

The above have all shown how important bass players are in a band and how the co-operation between a bass and a guitar can create some fantastic masterpieces. If you check out our guitar video lessons, you can learn how to create the amazing tunes that a good bass player is able to enhance and support.
