It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like)

What are the Hardest Aspects of Learning Guitar?

There are people who think learning to play the guitar is the easiest thing to do and then there are those who believe it’s too hard. But the truth is, anyone can learn to play the guitar, as long as they remember that becoming a guitarist isn’t something that happens overnight! Although learning to play won’t be as hard as flying a rocket to the moon, you need to overcome a few tricky aspects in order to succeed.

Being Patient

It might seem like a strange thing to say, but understanding chords and knowing how to read tabs isn’t as difficult as staying patient. As mentioned, you won’t be the next Jim Hendrix in a week and frustration can easily creep in when you feel like you’re not progressing.

Try to take your learning slowly and don’t start reaching the moon until you got a launchpad built for your rocket. This means you need to start with the basics and keep repeating them until you are ready to take on the next challenge.

If you feel like you aren’t improving at all, try something different. Pick a new song or browse the internet for tips from other guitarists. Above all, don’t give up after a few weeks. Slowly but surely you will get there.

Practising Regularly

As well as learning to be patient, you also need to stick to a routine. The biggest reason people don’t succeed in learning to play the guitar is because they don’t practice often enough. Repetition is the key to mastering the guitar and you need to create yourself a routine and stick with it.

The good news is that learning to play the guitar is now easier than ever, thanks to technology. You can take online video lessons from the comfort of your own home and find tabs and chords online. This can all save you both time and money, while providing you the freedom to play whenever you have time and enthusiasm. Just remember to do it daily!

Reading Music

There’s a constant debate going on whether being able to read notes is important for learning an instrument. The truth is the ability to read music isn’t going to do you any harm.

Being able to visualise the sound you need to make will help you improve your guitar playing skills faster, so you should definitely try to add some music theory to your practice routine.

Training Your Fingers

There are two things making guitar playing a challenge for your fingers. First, you will experience sore fingers, especially at the start, when you play the guitar. The pain might make you feel like giving up, but try to stick through it, as it will get easier after time. In the meantime, try finger exercises and lotions to help make it a bit more bearable.

Second, getting your fingers to do exactly what you want is actually harder than it sounds. You’ll need to be patient and repeat the movements time after time before it starts becoming automatic. It is a good idea to practice playing the notes without the guitar as well. If you are stuck in traffic or queuing to the bank, play the chords with your fingers.

Learning to play guitar is a journey, but it can be a very rewarding one in the end. You can find plenty of resources to help you from our blog to make it a bit easier.

Top 10 Albums of 2014

2014 has been a great year in music. There have been plenty of fantastic newcomers, but also quite a bit of solid albums by seasoned musicians.

Here’s our pick of the top 10 albums of the year.

Sam Smith – In The Lonely Hour

One of the biggest breakthroughs of the year was Sam Smith’s success and his numerous Grammy nominations show that he did everything right in this album. His emotional lyrics and funky pop tunes didn’t leave anybody cold this year. I’m Not The Only One was a fantastic single from the album.

Bleachers – Strange Desire

When band members step to do side-projects, it’s easy for everyone to get nervy. But the Fun. guitarist, Jack Antonoff, managed to pull off his new solo project in style and produced a great album. The tunes were bright and fun indie-pop songs with memorable riffs and hooks.

Run The Jewels – Run The Jewels 2

When Killer Mike and EI-P’s collaborative project Run The Jewels started last year, we didn’t know what to expect. The first album was a solid celebration of both of their individual talents, but in this second they truly blended in together, making us question why they didn’t do this before. If you love rap, this album is the definite must-have.

Taylor Swift – 1989

1989 truly transformed Taylor Swift into a pop icon and her album was a clear move away from her country roots. The album was a great mix of classic pop hooks combined with some quirky charismatic tunes. You simply can’t have gone through the year without ‘shaking it off’ at some point!

Owen Pallett – In Conflict

Owen Pallett isn’t your mainstream star, but he is definitely adored in the indie circles and this violin virtuoso truly showcased his talent in his album In Conflict. The album is an amazing mixture of stripped-back tunes, with only his violin and voice to charm you, and big, grandiose rock songs that have a bit of everything to captivate you.

The War On Drugs – Lost In The Dream

Anyone who loves classic rock tunes, but with refreshing twists, immediately fell in love with Lost In The Dream. The album was full of amazing rock ‘n’ roll tunes with quirky electronic mixes. The album was very emotionally charged, yet surprisingly energetic.

La Roux – Trouble In Paradise

Everyone was a bit fearful whether Elly Jackson and Ben Langmaid would get back together to produce fantastic, old-fashioned La Roux music, but luckily for us fans, Trouble In Paradise was a great comeback. It has all the classic elements with strange tunes, retro licks and splashes of synths. It also had a nice, fragile-like sound to it to add new depths to the album.

Damon Albarn – Everyday Robots

When the Blur frontman announced he is working on his first solo album, it was hard to know what to expect. But the Everyday Robots won’t leave you cold if you love melodic songs that come with a rich, mix of well-written lyrics. It perhaps doesn’t open on the first listen, but the more you play the album the more you fall in love with it.

St Vincent – St Vincent

The fourth album by Annie Clark managed to capture the times perfectly, some even stating Clark’s new status as a 21st century Ziggy Stardust. St Vincent was a brilliant album with pure raw emotion and glimpses of the amazing songwriter abilities of Clark.

Caribou – Our Love

Caribou’s album was full of beautifully crafted songs that you are able to play on your own on a rooftop or blast aloud at a festival. It manages to be very intimate and personal while still captivating masses with the energetic, dreamy songs. Second Chance is an especially brilliant song.

Let’s hope that 2015 proves to be as good as 2014 when it comes to albums. If you want to try creating your own versions of the above albums, you can check out our range of video lessons for guitar and saxophone.

R’n’B music is about to see a new face in 2015, with Shura making her mark in the genre. This singer-songwriter, who was born in Moscow to a Russian mother and an English father, is going to provide plenty of fresh vibes and a mixture of sounds.

Her music is very emotional, energetic and fun. It has influences from her time in South America as well as more textured pop sounds of the likes of Madonna and Janet Jackson. Give Touch a listen for a display of her talent.
