Tutor Description

James Morton has been playing sax since the age of eight. Now one of the most exciting jazz artists on the European music scene, James now plays solo gigs as well as with groups, including a James Brown tribute alongside Pee Wee Ellis, and another alongside Andy Sheppard. James has also worked with Pendulum and Kasabian, among other popular contemporary artists, and is a great tutor for anyone looking to bring edge and excitement to their own sax playing.

  • Minor 2,5,1's Series 2 - Lesson 1Lesson one of Minor 2,5,1's Series 2 is titled Introducing the Melodic Minor. James opens the lesson by briefly recapping some of the key learnings from Series 1, before moving into showcasing the differences between the Melodic Minor and Harmonic Minor scales. You'll play and practice both so you learn the difference and have the Melodic Minor comfortably under your fingers as you move into the rest of the series. Later in the lesson you'll focus purely on the Melodic Minor and enjoy ear training with the backing track playing in the background.
  • Minor 2,5,1's Series 2 - Lesson 2Lesson two is called Guide Tones, and as with many of the saxophone lessons here at Pro Music Tutor, the clue to what you'll cover is definitely in the title for this one! The lesson begins with James explaining just what Guide Tones are, before moving onto playing them while talking you through how to use each one. Once James has explained everything in full you're straight into playing these Guide Tones with the backing track playing in the background, a brilliant exercise for mastering Minor 2,5,1's.
  • Minor 2,5,1's Series 2 - Lesson 3Lesson three is called Targeting the 3rd. This is a great lesson for building your repertoire for improvising, and we're sure you'll come out of this lesson and move onto the remainder of Minor 2,5,1's Series 2 with some brilliant new ideas and inspirations for your own saxophone playing. James begins by explaining the notes you'll be playing during the second half of this lesson, as well as advising you to return to some of the lessons from Minor 2,5,1's Series 1 if you need to revisit any of these techniques. Explanation complete, the backing track goes on and you're playing along Targeting the 3rd with James.
  • Minor 2,5,1's Series 2- Lesson 4In lesson four you move onto Targeting the 7th. Following a brief introduction from James you'll be straight into playing your saxophone, with James talking you through the notes while demonstrating how they should sound. The backing track comes on early in this lesson so you'll be playing your saxophone most of the way through, playing rhythmically to get these 7ths under your fingers and leave yourself armed to play some incredible improvisations once you've completed Minor 2,5,1's Series 2.
  • Minor 2,5,1's Series 2 - Lesson 5In lesson five you will move onto Targeting 5ths. As in lessons two and three, you begin with James providing an explanation and demonstration of the 5ths you'll be learning throughout this lesson. James moves quickly onto demonstrating how you can Target 5ths to start and end your own licks. It isn't too long before the backing track is playing to enable you to learn and play along with James. After playing through some sequences himself, James talks you through the note progressions while the backing track continues to play, a great way to learn with pro guidance.
